Sunrise and sunset calculator
Estimate the sunrise and sunset times for any location (latitude, longitude) on a given date, using a standard astronomical formula calculated directly in your browser.
How it works
The calculation is based on the apparent position of the sun in the sky, determined from the day of the year and the latitude/longitude you enter, using the classic almanac astronomical formula (mean anomaly, ecliptic longitude, declination and the sun's hour angle), with an official zenith of 90.833° that accounts for atmospheric refraction.
Why do I need to specify the time zone?
The astronomical calculation produces a result in universal time (UTC): the time zone offset you enter (for example UTC+1 in winter or UTC+2 in summer for mainland France) converts this result into readable local time. Remember to adjust it for daylight saving or standard time in effect on the chosen date.
Why do some results show an error ("the sun does not rise")?
At very high latitudes (polar circles), there are times of the year when the sun stays above or below the horizon for 24 consecutive hours (polar day or night): the standard sunrise/sunset calculation doesn't apply in this particular case, hence the error message.
The calculation runs entirely in your browser in JavaScript — your location is never sent to a server.
