Text editor with character limit
Trim a text to an exact character limit — for a tweet, an SMS or an SEO meta description — without ever cutting a word in the middle. Counting and trimming happen entirely in your browser, and your text is never sent anywhere else.
How it works
Many formats impose a strict character limit: a standard SMS fits in 160 characters, a post on some social networks is capped at 280, and an effective SEO meta description rarely exceeds 155 to 160 characters. Rather than cutting a text at the exact character and risking a word being truncated in the middle, this tool steps back to the last full space before the limit, so that only whole words are kept.
How does the smart trim choose where to stop?
The tool starts at the limit you set, then steps back character by character until it finds the last space, which marks the end of a complete word. The text is then cut at that point, which guarantees that no word is truncated, even if the final result is a few characters shorter than the exact limit.
Why add an ellipsis?
An ellipsis clearly tells the reader that the text has been shortened and that a longer version exists. It is counted toward the limit: if you enable this option, the tool automatically reserves the space needed to add it without exceeding the desired number of characters.
