Shuffle the paragraphs of a text
Paste a text made up of several paragraphs (separated by a blank line) to randomly shuffle their order. Handy for creating exercise variants, testing the coherence of a text, or generating different versions of the same content.
How it works
The text is split into paragraphs at each blank line, then their order is randomly shuffled with an unbiased shuffling algorithm (Fisher-Yates), before being joined back together with a blank line between each paragraph. Click "Reshuffle" to get a new random order without retyping the text.
How should the text be structured to work well?
Each paragraph must be separated from the next by at least one completely empty line (two consecutive line breaks). A text spread over several lines with no blank line between them will be treated as a single paragraph and therefore can't be shuffled. Use the "Count words in multiple texts" tool if you need to process blocks of text entered separately.
Is the shuffle really random on every click?
Yes, each click on "Shuffle" or "Reshuffle" generates a new order independent of the previous ones, based on the browser's random number generator. There is no guarantee that two successive shuffles will give different results (chance can occasionally reproduce an order you already got), especially with a small number of paragraphs.
100% local processing: the shuffle runs entirely in your browser, and your text never leaves your device.
