Remove accents from text
Remove all accents (é, è, à, ç, ñ, etc.) from a text to get a version without diacritics — useful for generating an identifier, a URL slug or an ASCII-compatible file name.
How it works
Each accented character is replaced by its closest base letter (é, è, ê and ë all become "e", ç becomes "c", and so on), while all other characters stay unchanged. This is exactly what you need to generate a safe file name, a database identifier or a URL slug from a French title, without risking encoding problems on systems that don't handle accents well.
Is letter case preserved?
Yes, an uppercase "É" becomes an uppercase "E" and a lowercase "é" becomes a lowercase "e": only the accent mark is removed, not the case.
Are unaccented characters changed?
No, only the characters in the mapping table (the common accented vowels and consonants used in French) are transformed. Digits, punctuation and unaccented letters stay the same.
