VAT calculator

Calculate an amount including all taxes from a price excluding tax, or work back to the pre-tax amount and the VAT amount from a tax-inclusive price, with the rate of your choice. The calculation runs entirely in your browser.

How it works

Whether you're writing a quote or an invoice, or checking a displayed price, this calculation works both ways: add VAT to a pre-tax price, or remove VAT from a tax-inclusive price to find the pre-tax price and the exact amount of tax.

Why can't you just subtract 20% from a tax-inclusive price to get the pre-tax price?

Because the VAT rate applies to the pre-tax amount, not the tax-inclusive amount: subtracting 20% from the tax-inclusive price would give a result that's too low. The correct formula divides the tax-inclusive price by (1 + rate), for example by 1.20 for a 20% rate, to recover the exact pre-tax amount.

What VAT rates are used in France?

The standard rate is 20% and applies to most goods and services. The intermediate rate of 10% covers, for example, restaurants or certain renovation work, the reduced rate of 5.5% applies to essential goods, and the special rate of 2.1% covers a small number of products (such as certain reimbursable medicines).

Your amounts are never sent to a server: the calculation runs entirely locally in your browser.
