Vowel and consonant counter
Analyze the distribution of vowels and consonants in a text, with the matching percentages. The count updates live as you type, entirely in your browser.
How it works
Useful for a linguistics exercise, a word game, or to check how a brand name or a nickname sounds before you pick it. Paste your text and the vowel and consonant counters update automatically.
Is "y" counted as a vowel?
Yes, for simplicity the tool treats "y" as a vowel, which matches its most frequent use in French (as in "y" or "cyclone"), even though it can sometimes act as a semi-consonant depending on the word. Accented letters (é, è, à, ô...) are also counted as vowels.
What is counted under "other characters"?
This category covers everything that is not a letter of the alphabet: digits, spaces, punctuation and symbols. It lets you confirm that the total of vowels and consonants covers only the letters in your text.
The text you analyze stays on your device. No data is sent to a server.
