Word and character counter

Count words, characters, lines and sentences of a text live.

Example:
0 words
0 characters (with spaces)
0 characters (without spaces)
0 lines
0 sentences

How it works

Useful for checking the length of a text before submitting it to a precise limit: a Twitter/X post limited to 280 characters, an SEO meta description recommended between 150 and 160 characters, or the word count required for an article or an assignment. Type or paste your text: the counters update automatically with every change, with no button to click.

How are words counted?

A word is a sequence of letters, digits, apostrophes or hyphens; spaces and punctuation marks (commas, periods, parentheses…) act as separators and aren't counted as words. "Don't" or "well-known" therefore each count as a single word.

How is the number of sentences estimated?

It's an approximation: the tool counts periods, exclamation marks and question marks that are followed by a space or that end the text. Abbreviations ("Mr. Smith", "etc.") or ellipses may therefore slightly skew the exact count, but the result remains a good estimate for typical text.

Processing is entirely local, performed in your browser via WebAssembly: your text never leaves your computer.
